Hey guys, today i came across this interesting problem and i think i should share it with all of you. Actually it's a rather FAMOUS puzzle which, i think, many of you heard about. It's called

THE MONTY HALL PROBLEM!

For the benefit of those who haven't heard about it and those who have heard about it but forgot what it was about, the problem goes like this:

In the 1960s, there was a popular weekly US television quiz show called Let's Make a Deal. Each week, at a certain point in the program, the host, Monty Hall, would present the contestant with three doors. Behind one door was a substantial prize; behind the others there was nothing. Monty asked the contestant to pick a door. Clearly, the chance of the contestant choosing the door with the prize was 1 in 3.

So far so good?

Now comes the twist. Instead of simply opening the chosen door to reveal what lay behind, Monty would open one of the two doors the contestant had not chosen, revealing that it did not hide the prize. (Since Monty knew where the prize was, he could always do this.) He then offered the contestant the opportunity of either sticking with their original choice of door, or else switching it for the other unopened door.

The question now is, does it make any difference to the contestant's chances of winning to switch, or might they just as well stick with the door they have already chosen?

Well, most people think that it makes no difference if they switch. Here is their reason:

"There are two unopened doors. The prize is behind one of them. The probability that it is behind the one I picked is 1/2, the probability that it is behind the one I didn't is also 1/2, so it makes no difference if I switch."

HOWEVER THAT EXPLAINATION IS WRONG!!
Why is it so??

Try to think about it before you look at the full and correct explaination here

The hint is "Switching actually DOUBLES the contestant's chance of winning"
Interesting??

Definitely!! Enjoy :D

Beauty of Maths

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 +10= 1111111111

9 x 9 + 7 = 88
98 x 9 + 6 = 888
987 x 9 + 5 = 8888
9876 x 9 + 4 = 88888
98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888
987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888
9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888
98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

Brilliant, isn't it?

And finally, take a look at this symmetry:

1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

Yes MATHS is really like that - Full of wonders.

You should also know the POWER OF 9.

Anything multiplied by 9 , it's sum total is 9.

For example, 62 * 9 = 558; 5 + 5 + 8 =18; 1+ 8 =9!
Just give it a try =)

Ever heard of this equation : e + 1 = 0 ?

It relates the five most fundamental constants in mathematics,

e and π are both transcendental and i is imaginary and yet they combine with 1 to make 0!

How wonderful <3

For those who are very bored with all the regular Maths lessons we learn in school, here are something you may find interesting

Russell's paradox:
The set M is the set of all sets that do not contain themselves as members. Does M contain itself?

If it does, it is not a member of M according to the definition.
If it does not, then it has to be a member of M, again according to the definition of M.
Therefore, the statements "M is a member of M " and "M is not a member of M " both lead to contradictions.

So what's the answer to this question?

Find more about this interesting Paradox here

Paradox of wizard and mermaid

An infinitely rich wizard has a mermaid in the pond of his garden. He likes to play with her and gold coins. Every minute he throws two coins in the pond and she throws him back one coin after a half minute.

When this game is allowed to run forever, how will the money be distributed? We are allowed put a label on all the coins, numbering them 1,2,3,4, etc.

Solution 1

The wizard gives the mermaid coin number 1 and 2, she returns number 1. He gives her number 3 and 4, she returns number 2. He gives her number 5 and 6, she returns number 3. And so forth.
Conclusion: eventually each coin returns to the wizard, so he will have everything back again and she has nothing.

Solution 2

The wizard gives the mermaid coin number 1 and 2, she returns number 2, keeping number 1. He gives her number 2 again together with 3, she returns number 3, keeping number 2. He throws number 3 and 4 in the pond, she gives him number 4 back, keeping number 3. And so forth.
Conclusion: at the end she will keep all the coins, and the wizard has nothing.

Solution 3

The wizard gives the mermaid coin number 1 and 2, she returns number 2, keeping number 1. Next time, however, the wizard throws coin number 3 and 4 in the pond, the mermaid keeping number 3, returning number 4. And so forth.
Conclusion: at the end she will have all the odd numbered coins and the wizard all the even numbered, so both are equally rich.

So which one is correct??? =)

Da Vinci - The Genius @ Singapore Science Center

A new addition to the Da Vinci – The Genius exhibition is the Secrets of Mona Lisa display. French scientific engineer and photographer of fine art, Pascal Cotte was granted unprecedented access by the French Government and The Louvre Museum to conduct an extensive scientific evaluation of this masterpiece. He did so under strict security and supervision, taking her out of her frame and away from the protective glass enclosure. His photographic examination and findings have startled the art world – making 25 revelations including identifying her original pigment colours, proving she indeed did have eyebrows and eyelashes and producing the world’s only 360 ° walk around replica.

More information can be found here

--------------------------------------------------------------

This exhibition is a very good exposure for all of us as it gives us great insights into Maths and Science. And it can be a fun bonding activity also. If possible, we may all go for it after Common Test. Details to be confirmed.

The original ticket price for this exhibition is $9 but if we can get 30 students to do, it will cost only $8 and we also have another $4 subsidies from the school. 2-way transport will be provided
as well so we dont have to worry about getting lost haha :)

For those who are interested, please let Jiang Yuan or Minh know asap, best before this weekend. You all are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to go though :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO NING RUI :D

Thank you so much for being such an enthusiastic member in our family haha. You've always been so helpful and friendly to all of us.

On your special day, we wish you a marvelous year ahead with all your dreams come true :) be awesome man

Due to SISC, there will be no Maths Soc session this friday, please check the blog regularly for further information.

Also, SMO training is postponed to next Monday(1st June) 3pm. Please be there on time :)
